Rumored: Specifications of PlayStation 4 and next-gen Xbox

VG247 claims to have drawn out some information on the next-gen PlayStation, codenamed Orbis, and the next Xbox, codenamed Durango. This information is rumored hardware specifications of the consoles, and although they do seem believable and practical, a rumor is a rumor is a rumor. This information was drawn out by VG247 reps from developer sources at the CES after-parties. Here’s what has been said/claimed:

PlayStation 4 will have a run-capability of 1.84 teraflops, whilst is Microsoft counterpart tops 1.23 teraflops. This makes PlayStation 4 roughly being able to achieve 50% more computational power than the next Xbox. Keep in mind though, this is only theoretical. We have already seen in the past, that theoretical numbers don’t really mean much. The PS3 is theoretically more powerful than the Xbox 360, yet the Xbox 360 tops PS3 in many games, like the recent DmC: Devil May Cry. It’s been proved here on GameSpot.

Moving on to the rumored specs, the PS4 might trump the Xbox 720 (??) in raw computational power, but the Xbox has a significant advantage when it comes to RAM. Xbox 720 will have a total of 8 GB RAM, of which 3 GB will be reserved for the OS and its apps, the balance 5 GB for games. In comparison, the Orbis will have a total of 4 GB of RAM, of which 1 GB for the OS and 3 GB for games. Both machines will support 100Gb Blu-ray discs.

Lets talk GPU now. Xbox Durango will be based on Radeon’s upcoming Sea Islands chipset a.k.a. the Radeon HD 8770.

As the PS4 chipset, it has been rumored previously that it will be built on AMD’s A10 APU.

Both Sony and Microsoft seem to have gone with AMD’s GPU solutions rather than nVidia. AMD has scored big here. Anyway, we are hoping that both the consoles will be unveiled at the upcoming E3. Who knows maybe we might even hear something at the Game Developers Conference this coming March. Several gaming-media outlets possess information on Xbox 720 (Durango) and we’re expecting a whole lot more information these coming days.
