Unity CEO David Helgason speaking at the company’s Unite Nordic conference in Malmo, announced that the engine is now free for indie devs on Android and iOS, with the same deal coming to BB10 and Windows Phone “in the coming months”. This is obviously a big deal for many small time indie developers, as they will have the perfect platform to showcase their talent. This will also give an overall boom to mobile gaming over all four operating systems.
Unity game engine is only free for companies with an annual turnover of less than 100,000$ in the previous fiscal year, and for developers falling in that category who purchased basic add-ons in the last 30 days, there will be a discount on their future purchases. The game engine costs over 800$ for mobile developers, and was made free for desktop apps back in 2009.
The latest product in the line is Unity 4, with the current version being Unity 4.1.2.
