Bioshock Infinite: We Have A New Big Daddy

The Bioshock team announced some mega (read: ill) news at the E3 conference. And it has something do with Bioshock’s signature character, the one and only, BIG DADDY!

Whats the one thing you can imagine being as monstrous, dangerous, bossy and preposterous as the Big Daddy?

Nothing, right?

Well there is one. And that’s Songbird.

I got you there didnt I?

Well, lets get to the point. The E3 is going to be a mega festival this time considering the amount of build up, with dozens of publishers showing gameplay videos of the upcoming games, and Bioshock was amongst one of them.  Just like the Big Daddy protected the Little Sisters, in Bioshock Infinite, the Songbird will protect Elizabeth, the woman you’re going to escort through the industrial-revolution-age city of Columbia, and you’re taken an oath for it.

Elizabeth shares an ‘It’s complicated’ kind of relationship with Songbird. Having spent her entire life under the guidance and nourishment by Songbird, she has conflicted emotions towards him. You can say that Elizabeth and Songbird love each other, but theres more to it. Elizabeth deep inside wants freedom from her father-husband like figure, but, she is emotionally weak to let go. Mind you, she is not the ‘damsel in distress’ kind of a broad. The Little Sisters in early Bioshocks were little girls, who were not even capable of taking decisions themselves, but Elizabeth is fully capable of acting and reacting the way she wants to. Elizabeth is an adult. She has a personality. Your character, Booker DeWitt, is supposed to  escort her to New York, and in other words, free her from Songbird. However, don’t expect to be treated like a Prince coming out to fight and rescue and kiss the damsel!

Elizabeth is outspoken, expressive, and she wont be a liability to Booker. She will be designed like an ally, and plays an active role in combat scenarios. Here is a 10 minute gameplay video of Bioshock Infinite recently released. There’s a whole lotta aspects to discuss but I wont be doing that, just check out the video.

The video ends with Songbird looking fiercely at Booker. Its eyes flaming red. Its wants to kill you. After all, you’ve stolen something what really mattered. Elizabeth tells Booker that heading back into that room with Songbird would be worse than death, but she also apologizes to Songbird, for breaking its heart. From all the pieces I’ve picked up, Songbird, although being as lethal and deadly as one could imagine, is an emotional wreck! Irrational Games, IMHO, in on the right path with Bioshock Infinite. Its a positive sign for evolution, which Bioshock 2 lacked.

Hey, they’ve also been some screenshots recently published. Its a slideshow, just click the arrows to move on to the next image. Enjoy them! Oh an hey, the screenshot with the huge poster of a guy, is actually the face of one of the winners of the ‘Get Your Face in Bioshock’ contests!
